Relaxed start then drove through Hobart and out to the east coast. Even after the heavy rains it was still a surprise to see just how fast the Prosser River was flowing as we crossed the bridge at Orford.
We stopped at the very helpful Tourist Info Centre in Triabunna to gather research material to plan our time on the east coast and at Freycinet National Park. We arrived in Swansea just on lunchtime so we bought some take away and ate it at the beach. Then we used a local map we’d procured from the well stocked Tourist Info Centre in town and did the walk around Waterloo Point abutting the golf course, which looked as if it would be quite a challenge on a windy day.
By this time it was two o’clock so we drove up to our pre-booked accommodation at the very grand looking Meredith House.
One of the two owners checked us in and showed us to our suite which was on the ground floor. It had a lovely lounge area with comfy chairs and couches as well as a small dining table. There was a large TV and a plentiful supply of DVDs. For those visiting in cooler months the open fire with an attractive wooden mantelpiece would be a bonus. Our bedroom looked out onto the back garden and had an access door to the back verandah. Another door led to the bathroom complete with spa bath. After unpacking and settling in we decided to go for a drive. Firstly we took our host’s tip and made an order at the local fish and chippery, Oysterbay Seafood. From there we drove out to the Nine Mile beach area. As we drove we looked for beach access for a walk but only saw one car park right at the very beginning. As we wanted to be closer to the Hazards we kept driving all the way out to Bagot Point. Quite a few houses to see as we drove, some just beach shacks but some very large indeed. After parking we made our way out to Bagot Point along the sand. Someone was having a relaxing time fishing where the river met the sea.
Had a chat with four other walkers and ended up joining them for a lengthy walk along Nine Mile Beach and back to our car. Excellent views of the Hazards and the sea made it very enjoyable.
The only access to the beach was via fire access tracks we discovered. On our return we relaxed until it was time to pick up our fish and chips, scallops and salad from Oysterbay Seafood. We ate back at our accommodation at Meredith House. A delicious meal was followed by a relaxing evening reading and watching TV.
